All Belgian Dog Breeds A to Z
The Belgian Shepherd family
Belgium's most famous dogs are its shepherds. Developed in the late nineteenth century from local herding dogs, they share the same build and working ability but differ in coat:
- Belgian Malinois: short fawn coat with a black mask, the top choice for many police and military units.
- Belgian Sheepdog (Groenendael): long, solid black coat.
- Belgian Tervuren: long coat, usually fawn to mahogany with black overlay.
- Belgian Laekenois: rough, tousled coat, and the rarest of the four.
The FCI treats them as varieties of one breed, while the AKC recognizes them as separate breeds.
Living with a Belgian Shepherd
All four varieties are intelligent, sensitive and extremely driven, with the Malinois usually the most intense. They excel at obedience, agility, herding, tracking and protection sports. In a pet home, they need hours of daily exercise and training, plus clear structure. Without that, they can become anxious, destructive or reactive. They are best for experienced owners who want an active working partner, not a casual companion.
If you love the look but not the intensity, the Groenendael and Tervuren are often described as slightly softer in temperament than the Malinois, though they still need plenty of work. For a calmer Belgian companion, the Brussels Griffon or Schipperke may be a better fit. Always ask breeders whether their lines are bred for work, sport or companionship, because drive levels can differ a lot between lines.
The Belgian griffons
The small griffons of Brussels were bred from ratting dogs and became beloved companions. The Brussels Griffon, Griffon Belge and Petit Brabançon share the same compact body and expressive, almost human face. The FCI separates them by coat and color, while the AKC recognizes them as one breed, the Brussels Griffon, with rough and smooth coats. They are affectionate and bond closely with their owners, but their short faces mean they need care in hot weather.
Other Belgian breeds
- Schipperke: a small, black, fox-faced dog once kept on canal barges and in workshops, curious, alert and a keen watchdog.
- Bouvier des Flandres: a large, rough-coated cattle dog from Flanders, a region shared by Belgium and France, calm and protective.
- Bloodhound: developed in large part at the Saint-Hubert monastery in the Ardennes, which is why it is known in Europe as the Chien de Saint-Hubert.
Care and health notes
The Belgian Shepherds are generally hardy, but responsible breeders screen for hip and elbow dysplasia and eye conditions. The long-coated Groenendael and Tervuren shed heavily, especially seasonally. The Bouvier needs regular grooming of its harsh coat, and the Bloodhound's deep chest makes it prone to bloat. Small griffons and the Schipperke can live long lives with good dental care and a healthy weight.
